Georgia IT Residence Permit 2026: The Fast-Track for Tech Professionals

Most tech professionals who come to Georgia know about the 1% tax for Individual Entrepreneurs. Far fewer know that Georgia also has a dedicated residence permit specifically for IT professionals — one that bypasses the standard 50,000 GEL annual turnover requirement entirely.
If you are a developer, software engineer, IT consultant, or tech founder with two years of experience and USD 25,000 in annual IT income, you may qualify for a three-year Georgian residence permit without needing to build up a year of declared Georgian turnover first.
What Is the IT Residence Permit and Why Does It Exist?
Georgia introduced the IT Specialist Residence Permit as part of its 2025-2026 immigration reforms — a dedicated pathway for skilled technology professionals that reflects the global and remote nature of IT work.
The standard work residence permit requires your Georgian company to demonstrate at least 50,000 GEL in annual turnover before you can apply for residency — meaning a minimum 12-month wait after registering. The IT permit works differently: instead of proving company turnover, you prove personal income and professional experience. If you already have USD 25,000 from IT work in the last year and two years of documented experience, you can apply straight away.
Who Qualifies
| Category | Who It Covers |
|---|---|
| IT employees | Foreign nationals employed by a Georgian-registered IT company under a local employment contract |
| Self-employed IT professionals | Individual Entrepreneurs with Small Business Status working in IT — freelancers, consultants, independent developers |
| International IT company representatives | Authorised representatives and managers of international IT companies operating in Georgia |
| IT entrepreneurs | Founders and directors of Georgian IT companies who meet the income threshold |
The Two Requirements
Requirement 1: At Least 2 Years of IT Experience
Evidenced through employment contracts, freelance agreements, professional certifications, portfolio documentation, or GitHub history. The definition of qualifying IT activities is broad — software development, web development, mobile apps, IT consulting, DevOps, cybersecurity, data science, UX/UI, SaaS, and related fields all qualify.
Requirement 2: USD 25,000 Annual Income From IT Activities
Income from IT work in the last 12 months, evidenced through bank statements showing deposits at least 30 days apart. Key points:
Standard work residence permit: requires 50,000 GEL (approx. USD 18,500) in company turnover over 12 consecutive months — meaning you wait at least a year after registering.
IT residence permit: requires USD 25,000 in personal IT income over the last 12 months — which you may already have from work done before arriving in Georgia. No waiting period.
For a high-earning IT professional who is new to Georgia, the IT permit is typically faster, cleaner, and better suited to how tech professionals actually work.

Questions We Get Asked a Lot
Click any question to expand.
Do I need to be physically in Georgia to apply?
Yes — first-time applicants must submit in person at a Georgian Public Service Hall while physically present in Georgia. You cannot apply from abroad for the initial permit. Once submitted, you can remain in the country during the processing period.
Does the IT permit replace the work permit?
No — they are separate requirements. The Right to Labour Activity permit must be obtained before you apply for the IT Residence Permit. The work permit is the authorisation to work in Georgia; the IT Residence Permit is your long-term right to reside here based on your IT professional status.
Can I combine the 1% tax regime with the IT Residence Permit?
Yes — and this is the most common combination for IT freelancers in Georgia. Register as an Individual Entrepreneur, apply for Small Business Status to access the 1% tax rate, get the work permit, then apply for the IT Residence Permit using your IE income history. The two systems work together seamlessly.
What counts as IT activities for the income requirement?
Software development, web development, mobile app development, IT consulting, systems architecture, DevOps, cybersecurity, data science, machine learning, UX/UI design, SaaS products, and related technology services all qualify. If clients are paying you for technology work, it almost certainly counts.
Can my family join me on this permit?
Yes. Once you hold an IT Residence Permit, your spouse and dependent children can apply for family reunification residence permits. They do not need to independently meet the income or experience requirements — your primary permit status is sufficient. Family permits are typically issued for the same duration as yours.
What happens at renewal?
You must demonstrate continued IT activity and income of at least USD 25,000 in the period since your last permit. The renewal follows the same documentation requirements as the initial application. Legal Vista handles renewals as part of our ongoing compliance service.
